This event was held at Callao Naval Base on Wednesday.
The
Ministry of Defense underscored that
this project is significant for the acquisition of SIMA construction capabilities, since for the first time in Peru it was possible to cut the resistant hull of a submarine unit so as to replace diesel engines, power wiring, valves, and pipes and then re-weld it.
The ministry reported that all electronic equipment inside the BAP Chipana will also be replaced with state-of-the-art sensors.
The installation of a low-frequency flank sonar stands out —an important technological leap that puts Peruvian submarines on par with the most modern ones around the world.
Therefore,
Minister Chavez Cresta extended special congratulations to the team of SIMA technicians and professionals over this achievement.
He underscored that the development of the Peruvian industry is ensured thanks to the execution of this type of projects.
The BAP Chipana is one of four nearly 40-year-old submarines that will be modernized and repaired by SIMA using high technology, so that their useful life can be extended for 15 or 20 more years.
As part of this objective, the Peruvian shipyard is also carrying out strengthening works on the BAP Antofagasta.
Works will later continue on the BAP Angamos and the BAP Pisagua.
