Peru might become lithium and electric vehicle producer

11:04 | Lima, Aug. 15.

The more than 4 million tons of lithium carbonate reserves found in Andean Puno region over the past years, as well as similar findings, represent an opportunity for Peru to become a producer of this metal and manufacturer of electric vehicles, PwC Peru said on Thursday.

"The demand for lithium will grow as time goes by because of the use of electric-vehicle batteries. Then, with a mid-term vision, Peru might become a lithium producer, so progress needs to be made to regulate its use," said Pablo Saravia, PwC Peru’s main mining partner.

"We could even become electric vehicle producers with this resource of lithium. With electric vehicles, we will be less dependent on fossil fuels," he added.

Saravia noted that Peru could make an exponential use of the lithium production in its territory, considering it is highly demanded by developed countries. Besides, countries like Bolivia, Chile and Argentina have already started to export it.

"Lithium needs to be specially regulated. I understand the Government is working on a project, but there have been no new developments in this respect," he stated.

Mining technology

On the other hand, according to the report "Mine 2019: Generating Resources for the Future," conducted by PwC Peru, the use of technology to operate in a more secure and efficient manner, as well as to maintain a disciplined strategy to develop a continuing value in its stakeholders, would shape a better future for communities and consumers.
