Peru: Maria del Carmen Alva becomes new Congress Chairwoman

12:58 | Lima, Jul. 26.

Accion Popular (Popular Action) legislator Maria del Carmen Alva Prieto has been elected as the new Congress Chairwoman for the 2021-2022 term.

She will be joined by fellow legislators: First Vice-Chairwoman Lady Mercedes Camones Soriano (Alianza para el Progreso), Second Vice-Chairman Enrique Wong Pujada (Podemos Peru), and Third Vice-Chairwoman Patricia Rosa Chirinos Venegas (Avanza País).

The group was elected by 69 legislators, whereas other 10 lawmakers voted for the challenging —and also multiparty— list led by Jorge Carlos Montoya Manrique.

The voting session took place on Monday at Parliament headquarters.

As is known, the 130 lawmakers elected for the 2021-2026 term were sworn into office last Friday during a face-to-face ceremony, complying with the biosafety protocols in times of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The new Parliament is made up of 10 political parties: Peru Libre (Free Peru), Fuerza Popular (Popular Force), Acción Popular (Popular Action), Alianza para el Progreso (Alliance for Progress), Renovación Popular (Popular Renewal), Avanza País (Go on Country), Podemos Peru (We Can Peru), Juntos por el Peru (Together for Peru), Somos Peru (We Are Peru), and Partido Morado (Purple Party).
