Lockdown in provinces under extreme risk level —including Metropolitan Lima and Callao— has been lifted as of today, March 1, while new measures will be implemented to curb the spread of COVID-19 in these areas.
The lifting of this measure has been made official by
Supreme Decree No. 036-2021-PCM, which was published in the official gazette El Peruano on February 27.
Additionally, the Government has announced new measures to combat the pandemic in these areas, which will be in effect from March 1 to 14.
According to the above-mentioned decree, mandatory social immobility —also known as curfew— will run from 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. the next day in regions under extreme risk level.
Moreover, curfew will be in force all day long on Sundays March 7 and 14.
The provinces under extreme risk are: Huaraz (Ancash region); Huamanga (Ayacucho region); Canchis (Cusco region); Huancavelica and Tayacaja (Huancavelica region); Huanuco (Huanuco region); Ica and Chincha (Ica region); Huancayo, Tarma, Chanchamayo, Satipo, and Chupaca (Junin region).
The list also includes Metropolitan Lima, Huaura, Barranca, Huarochiri, and Huaral (Lima region); Callao (Callao region); Maynas (Loreto region); Ilo (Moquegua region); Oxapampa (Pasco region); Puno (Puno region); and Tacna (Tacna region).
Capacity limits in extreme risk areas
The capacity limit at outdoor locations for performing arts (mass events, carnivals and traditional festivals are prohibited), malls, shopping arcades, conglomerates, department stores, and shops in general will be 20%.
At stores selling essential goods, supermarkets, markets, itinerant markets, bodegas, and pharmacies, the capacity limit will be 40%.
At restaurants and related facilities in ventilated indoor areas and those located outdoor, the capacity limit will be 30%. In addition, delivery service is allowed to operate from 4 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Meanwhile, at banks and other financial entities, the capacity limit will be 40%.
Likewise, salons, spas, barbershops, as well as locations offering facial massages, manicures, make-up, and other related activities are allowed to operate at 40% capacity (by appointment only).
At libraries, museums, archaeological monuments, cultural centers and galleries, protected areas, botanical gardens, and zoos, the capacity limit will be 30%.
Finally, at locations for cultural education, the capacity limit will be 20%.
On February 10, the Peruvian Government decided to extend for another 14 days the measures imposed on areas under extreme risk due to the presence of the new coronavirus in the country.
As stated by Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez, this decision was made based on scientific evidence and epidemiological indicators, regarding the impact of COVID-19 in the national territory.
Thus, the extended lockdown was in force from February 15 to 28.
