Peru: Justice Ministry committed to continuing to promote use of native languages

The Peruvian Ministry of Justice and Human Rights (Minjusdh) on Wednesday pledged to continue promoting the use of native languages with the aim of guaranteeing the closing of social gaps.

This message was issued by the government agency via the X platform (formerly Twitter).

"The linguistic diversity of Peru is part of its enormous cultural richness, and it must be recognized as such by the (Peruvian) State and society. From the Minjusdh, we will continue to promote the use of native languages, guaranteeing the closing of social gaps," reads the message.

The International Mother Language Day is part of the International Decade of Indigenous Languages (IDIL 2022-2032) and in accordance with the proclamation by the United Nations General Assembly, with the purpose of ensuring the linguistic rights of indigenous or native peoples.

In Latin America, Peru ranks fourth among the countries with the largest number of native languages, being preceded by Brazil, Mexico, and Colombia.
