Peru: Judiciary orders prosecutors to complete Southern Gas Pipeline investigation stage

15:34 | Lima, Feb. 13.

Peruvian Judge Juan Sanchez Balbuena on Thursday ordered the Lava Jato Case Special Prosecution Group to complete —within a period of 10 days— the preliminary stage of the investigation against former First Lady Nadine Heredia —wife of former President Ollanta Humala (2011-2016).

Likewise, he urged the team to decide whether to formalize or shelve the investigation involving her in the
Southern Gas Pipeline Project.

The magistrate made this decision after declaring well founded the deadline control request submitted by her defense team given that the deadline for preliminary investigation has ended.

The former First Lady is investigated for the alleged crime of collusion by Prosecutor Geovanna Mori, who claimed that Heredia allegedly used her influence to benefit the Odebrecht company with the Southern Gas Pipeline concession.

Last January, the Judicial Branch issued an order to ban Heredia from leaving Peru for a period of 12 months.

Former Odebrecht representative in Peru Jorge Barata told the Lava Jato Case Special Prosecution Group that he had met several times with former President Ollanta Humala (2011-2016) and Nadine Heredia to discuss issues related to the project.

In July 2019, Peru's Lava Jato Case Special Prosecution Group Coordinator Rafael Vela affirmed that Odebrecht admitted —in a signed document— the illegal payments it had made for the Southern Gas Pipeline Project.
