Peru: Joint Command of Armed Forces' head designation extended for one year

The Executive Branch has extended for another year the appointment of Army General Manuel Gomez de La Torre as Chief of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces.

The measure is contained in Supreme Resolution No. 040-2023-DE published in the Official Gazette El Peruano on Friday.

The extension of the mandate is framed within the provisions of Article 10 of the Law on the Military Situation of Armed Forces Officers (Law No. 28359).

Said regulation establishes that the mandate granted to the generals or admirals appointed as Chief of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces or General Commander of the corresponding armed institution can be extended only for one year.

The time frame that the exercise of such duties originally lasts is two years.

Background

Gomez de La Torre was appointed Chief of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces on August 3, 2021, via Supreme Resolution No. 027-2021-DE.

The latest resolution was signed by the President of the Republic Dina Boluarte and Defense Minister Jorge Chavez.
