The
World Wildlife Fund (WWF) congratulated Lima's Jesus Maria district for being named the regional winner of the Americas at this year's
We Love Cities competition, which brought together 63 cities across 27 countries.
The contest, whose regional round chooses the Most Beloved City in the Americas, is organized with the aim of encouraging residents to express —through digital voting— their support for sustainable and environmental development of their cities.
Jesus Maria Mayor Jorge Quintana thanked residents for their participation and enthusiasm in the digital voting process, after acknowledging the efforts to make this district a better place to live.
Quality of life
In this regard, the local authority commented that quality of life is related to the space that is inhabited, as well as to the quality of the air that is breathed, noting that his administration has worked on the recovery of 33 parks and has planted 10,000 trees over the course of four years.
In addition, the Zero Waste plan —which promotes the use of waste and apparently useless materials— helped establish the first eco-park in the country, which houses a vegetable garden, a composting plant, a nursery, an aquarium, a playground, and offers free workshops.
"
We Love Cities" is a public engagement campaign, led by WWF, which encourages people from all over the world to express their support for sustainable urban development by voting for their cities across the globe.
In total, 1.29 million votes, as well as 116,000 suggestions and comments, were received from cities around the world.
