Inti Raymi festivities attracted about 36,000 attendees, thereby generating an economic impact of S/33 million (about US$9.17 million), the
Ministry of Foreign Trade and Tourism (Mincetur) reported on Sunday.
"The arrival of hundreds of domestic and foreign tourists, in addition to the massive participation of the Cusco people, generated an economic impact of S/33 million (about US$9.17 million)," the government agency said referring to the activities held within the framework of the Imperial City's jubilee celebrations.
Inti Raymi is a historic religious ceremony that takes place every year in Cusco region, as a tribute to the Sun God.
"It attracted about 36,000 attendees, of whom 44% were locals, 31.5% were foreign tourists, and 24.5% were domestic visitors," Minister Juan Carlos Mathews remarked.
"The region’s economic activities, especially tourism-related businesses, experienced a positive boost during these festivities," he added.
According to a study conducted by Mincetur's General Directorate of Research and Studies on Tourism and Handicrafts, out of the total of foreigners present in this year's edition of Inti Raymi, 28.1% came from the United States, 16.3% were Brazilians, 11.8% came from Colombia, 6.5% were French nationals, 3.3% came from Spain, while Argentina and Chile had a share of 5.9% of the total international tourists each.
"We know that 38.6% of the attendees planned their trip to Cusco —to be part of Inti Raymi— more than three months in advance, whereas 27.8% did it between one and three months beforehand, which shows the importance of the festivity for tourists," the government official remarked.
