Interior Minister Alfonso Chavarry on Wednesday urged police members who denounced the existence of an alleged mafia within the National Police of Peru, which would favor informal transportation in exchange for bribes, to appear at his office and provide information to dismantle said organization.

Concerning the complaint reported on a local TV channel, the Cabinet member said the National Police Inspector General was ordered to "conduct an exhaustive investigation to determine responsibilities."

"I call on these hooded cops to come to my office and give me information to identify those bad cops who make our institution look bad. If there is responsibility (for the acts), those involved will be drastically sanctioned," he told reporters during a press conference.

State of emergency

The Interior minister also referred to the joint work with the Armed Forces within the framework of the state of emergency decreed for Lima Metropolitan Area and Callao region.

In this regard, high-ranking official indicated that "operations are being carried out continuously."

"However, members of specialized units, such as Terna and Dinincri, continue to conduct precise interventions in the fight against organized crime (…) bank robberies have been foiled and criminal gangs have been captured over the last 24 hours," the minister emphasized.

"Therefore, we are timely using intelligence teams and working with Dinincri teams to detect, locate, capture, and dismantle these organizations which do so much damage to society," he concluded.
