Prime Minister Anibal Torres on Wednesday announced that the Interior and Defense sectors will articulate and intensify their actions in a coordinated manner so that the declaration of citizen security emergency becomes a reality.

"We must combat crime thoroughly; we must generate citizen security. Without security, no other activity can be carried out," he pointed out during a press conference following the Council of Ministers session.

Likewise, the Cabinet chief stressed that citizen security is not only a responsibility of the National Police and the Armed Forces (that latter within the framework of the state of emergency), but also of regional and local governments.

In this sense, the Prime Minister affirmed that the Cabinet will undertake efforts so that Serenazgo (municipal police) agents work in a coordinated manner with the National Police of Peru.

Therefore, he announced that the Executive Branch is considering the possibility of presenting a bill so that Serenazgo members are allowed to use non-lethal weapons, prior preparation.

"We have said that over and over again; (let's) arm Serenos (municipal police members) with non-lethal weapons, but of course with prior preparation," Torres remarked.
