Peru: Health Ministry reinforces support for Arequipa to fight COVID-19

16:15 | Lima, Jul. 21

Peru's southern region of Arequipa has the medical and healthcare capacity to face the COVID-19 pandemic, but they need a better organization, Health Minister Pilar Mazzetti affirmed on Tuesday.

Within this framework, the high-ranking official stressed that the ministry deployed a new technical mission, health professionals and medical supplies to Arequipa earlier today, hoping to work together with the region's authorities.

"Former (Health) Minister Zulema Tomas is at the head of our mission (...) I have left a message for the governor (Elmer Caceres Llica) to engage in coordination with her," Mazzetti expressed.

It must be noted that the mission is joined by Social Health Insurance System (EsSalud) Executive-President Fiorella Molinelli and 80 health professionals, who bring 150 oxygen cylinders to the region.

Likewise, the minister criticized the fact that not enough resources had been mobilized in Arequipa to face the pandemic, that personal protective equipment (PPE) had not been purchased or distributed, and that it is necessary to catch up on payments to health staff and hire a greater number of professionals.

"We can overcome this pandemic by working together (...). We have to make quick decisions and be aware of the weaknesses," she remarked.

Quarantine

Regarding the evolution of the COVID-19 pandemic nationwide, Minister Mazzetti said that there has been a slow and progressive increase in the number of patients in hospitals and Intensive Care Units since last Friday.

The government official said that if this trend remains in place, it will be necessary to assess tougher measures. "There is always the possibility of quarantine, but there are also alternatives that we must consider," she stated.

"The virus kills, but hunger and despair also kill us, too," she emphasized. Thus, the Minsa head called on the population to take extreme measures of self-care to avoid becoming infected, given that the health system makes an enormous effort. However, it has limits.
