Peru Health Min: 8,000 COVID-19 tests processed between Tuesday and Wednesday

14:51 | Lima, Apr. 8.

Peru's Health Minister Victor Zamora on Wednesday reported that 8,000 tests have been processed between Tuesday and Wednesday to detect COVID-19 infection.

"When I took office, around 500 tests a day were being carried out, exclusively the molecular ones. This has gradually increased to a total of 40,000 molecular and serological tests. 8,000 tests have been processed between Tuesday and Wednesday. Our objective, although ambitious, is to carry out 12,000 tests per day, combined and depending on the region," he said.

According to the Cabinet member, laboratory diagnosis is being improved by diversifying the tools available in the country, "in order to have a clear picture of how the epidemic is evolving."

Regarding the distribution of products, he said this is done taking into account two criteria: population density and number of positive cases.

Zamora took the opportunity to report that the COVID-19 Operations Command is already present in Piura, Tumbes, Loreto, and Arequipa.

"We are doing inspections everywhere to reorganize the response of health services in order to expand hospitalization and intensive care capacity in all cases," he expressed.

Wednesday marks the twenty-fourth day of mandatory social isolation.
