Environment Minister Ruben Ramirez has affirmed that the Government will address the situation of the oil spill in Lima's Ventanilla sea area forcefully, through the joint work to be conducted by the Environmental Crisis Committee.

Ramirez —who participated in a meeting with Energy-Mines and Production ministers, legislators, fishermen's unions, and Repsol representatives— remarked that the establishment of this Committee was approved by the Council of Ministers, noting that it is also made up of portfolios such as Justice, Defense, Agrarian Development-Irrigation, and led by his sector, Environment.

"In conclusion, it (the oil spill situation) will be addressed forcefully, with actions and the schedule, as well as with supervision. This will be addressed by the Crisis Committee because tasks will be assigned to all sectors," he indicated.

After the meeting, held at La Pampilla refinery, the minister underscored that very important agreements have been reached, not only on environmental issues, but also on social ones.

"The company set out a serious program for the recovery of the degraded area. So, a schedule with a specific date will be presented tomorrow (Thursday), because what matters to us is a work schedule that can be scrupulously fulfilled," he explained.

Additionally, the government official remarked that the company has announced that works are being implemented in the affected area, noting that the response must be quick and efficient.

On the other hand, he commented that Repsol claimed that the spill took place on the high seas during strong waves that occurred last weekend. The cargo hose got disconnected, thus causing the spill.

"It was believed to be a minor incident, but then it was reported that around 6,000 barrels of oil had been spilled, and the Agency for Environmental Assessment and Enforcement (OEFA) will assess and take action," Ramirez expressed.
