Peruvian Defense Minister Jorge Chavez on Monday announced that the President of the Republic Dina Boluarte has decided to restructure the Reconstruction with Changes Program's master plan in order to prevent future emergencies.

"Priority must be given to public works to improve the drainage system collecting the water that is deposited in different places as a consequence of the rain and, second, to the management of river basins, because that was the purpose of the Reconstruction with Changes (RCC) program," the Defense sector's head remarked.

"If we don't do that in the medium term and a similar or worse scenario occurs next year, in the presence of a global El Niño phenomenon, we will see more emergencies, which we may not be able to contain, if we do not take a quick and immediate action on the works that must be carried out under this restructuring," Chavez added.

The minister pointed out that part of these measures will focus on houses, since 60% of them are located in highly vulnerable areas.

Likewise, the Cabinet member indicated that the restructuring is not related to the people who make it up.

In this regard, he explained that the current head of RCC, Rosmary Cornejo —who has been recently appointed as such— will be part of said process.

"We cannot continue to experience this type of impact caused by the rain next year," the government official stated.

Additionally, the Defense Ministry's (Mindef) head pointed out that the Executive Branch is attending and responding to the emergency caused by the rains in all regions across the country, by evacuating those affected and providing them with support and humanitarian aid.

Remarks were made in an interview with RPP Noticias on Monday morning.
