The Executive Branch prioritizes actions that result in creating well-being of native peoples in the Peruvian central jungle, by meeting their demands, Culture Minister Leslie Urteaga reported.

The high-ranking official highlighted the agreements adopted during the meeting that she and other members of the Government held on Saturday with representatives of the Regional Association of Indigenous Peoples of the Central Rainforest—ARPI-SC from the regions of Junin, Pasco, Huanuco, Cusco, and Ayacucho.

"We have expressed our commitments in each sector: We will travel to Satipo by the end of January to establish a multisectoral commission. We will have a more active role in the protection of their rights," she said.

Likewise, Urteaga admitted that there are historical demands that the Ministerial Cabinet will meet urgently.

"We had an extensive debate, and a civilized conversation, recognizing each other as brothers and sisters. We have reached the same conclusion: dialogue and peace should lead us to work on the same goals," the minister pointed out.

Discussion topics

The topics discussed included the bill to amend the Forestry Law, priority attention to basic services of native communities, and the implementation of a working group between organizations of the central jungle area and sectors of the Executive Branch so as to meet their demands.

For his part, ARPI-SC President Jorge Chauca thanked the Executive Branch for showing openness to listen to them.

"Dialogue is the best way to continue moving forward. The central jungle area seeks peace," he remarked.

Also participating in the meeting were Ministers Hania Perez de Cuellar (Housing and Construction), Albina Ruiz (Environment), Nelly Paredes (Agrarian Development and Irrigation), Jose Tello (Justice), and Oscar Vera (Energy and Mines).
