The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday said that it expects that the recently-called elections in Ecuador will ensure governance and social peace.

"The Government of Peru reiterates its support for the democratic process in the sister Republic of Ecuador," the Ministry said in a statement posted on Twitter.

"We hope that general elections, which will result from the decision adopted by President Guillermo Lasso in exercise of his constitutional powers, will allow the Ecuadorian people to ensure the exercise of political governance and social peace," it added.

Ecuadorean President Guillermo Lasso dissolved the National Assembly (Parliament) on Wednesday and called early general elections.

Lasso's announcement came a day after he appeared before the National Assembly to defend himself in an impeachment trial for alleged embezzlement raised by the opposition.

Afterwards, General Nelson Proaño, the head of the Joint Command of the Armed Forces, affirmed that the President's decision is legally grounded and must be respected by all citizens.
