Prime Minister Violeta Bermudez on Wednesday announced that a working group will be created, composed of well-known professionals, who will be in charge of providing technical criteria to update the number of COVID-19-related deaths in Peru.

Within this framework, the high-ranking official stated that one of the critical issues is the death toll, which is why the Government —in a spirit of transparency— decided to establish this working group.

"We have made the decision to convene and create a technical working group, of a temporary nature and attached to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, with the aim of proposing and relying on technical criteria to update the numbers of deaths from COVID-19," she indicated.

The Cabinet chief reported that among the experts —who will generously contribute to this group— are Ragi Burhum, Maria del Rocio Villanueva, and Walter Alban, among others.

"This working group will collaborate with the Executive Branch until May 31 of this year. This is an opportunity on which we hope to rely on the technical criteria and have this updated and verified information," she said.

Infections

Concerning COVID-19 infections, the Prime Minister indicated that these have not been reduced, adding that —unfortunately in the past week— the number of deceased people has increased by 43.9%.

"Within this framework, it seems important to us to communicate to the citizenry that we cannot lower our guard; contagion is the starting point of critical situations. From this perspective, we have agreed to maintain restrictive measures for each risk level," Bermudez indicated.

The government's spokesperson reminded reporters that —at this moment— there is a set of provinces at high, very high, and extreme risk levels. Thus, she said, this situation does not allow the Government to make measures for those risk levels flexible.

"The measures, which we are going to communicate, will be implemented during the next three weeks from Monday, April 19, to Sunday, May 9. However, we will be monitoring each of the provinces to find out if the situation improves," she announced.
