Peru: Free entrance tickets to Machu Picchu already gone

12:59 | Cusco (Cusco region), Oct. 23.

Machu Picchu is the center of attraction according to Peruvians. Everyone wants to visit the Inca citadel, which was recognized as a world wonder. This growing expectation led to the fact that entrance tickets to Peru's main tourist destination are no longer available, as it gets ready to welcome new tourists from November 1 —its reopening day.

This was reported on the archaeological park's official website, which specified that free entrance tickets for domestic tourists are gone until November 15.

The information was confirmed by the Decentralized Culture Directorate of Cusco (DDCC).

Authorities of the Machu Picchu Management Unit (UGM), which continue to encourage tourism and compliance with health protocols in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, announced that said access will run from Mondays to Saturdays, thus benefiting 8,100 citizens.

In the massive group of people, who will be granted free-of-charge access, children under 12 years of age are not comprised.

It was also specified that groups —composed of eight people, including the tour guide— will enter the archeological park.

A release specifies that institutions such as the Ministry of Culture, the National Service for Protected Natural Areas (Sernanp), the Municipality of Machu Picchu, and the private sector must guarantee health protocols.

Visitors must maintain social distancing of up to two meters (among groups), wear face masks, as well as face shields when boarding vehicle units, and bring alcohol-based hand sanitizers.

Machu Picchu will have a reduced capacity for compliance with biosafety measures. Based on what was announced, only a maximum of 675 people a day will be allowed to enter the area —a measure to prevent the spread of COVID-19.
