Peru: Formal private sector employment accrues 32 months of consecutive growth

Formal employment in the private sector accumulated 32 months of uninterrupted growth, up 4.1% in November 2019 compared to the same month a year earlier, thus generating around 151,383 formal jobs in Peru.

According to data provided by the Ministry of Labor and Employment Promotion, with this result, formal private sector employment registered a cumulative growth of 3.9% between January and November 2019, over the same period of the previous year.

In November 2019, formal employment rose at all economic sectors: services (4.1%; 76,572 jobs), agriculture (8.3%; 28,222 jobs), trade (2.6%; 15,487 jobs), manufacturing (2.5%; 13,347 jobs), construction (6.5%; 13,209 jobs), and mining (1.2%; 1,197 jobs).

In addition, in January-November 2019, the number of formal jobs increased by 0.4 percentage points in the services sector, compared to the same period the year before.

In November 2019, a growth in formal private sector employment was reported in 22 regions of the country, particularly in Lima (2.8%; 60,370 jobs), Piura (12.9%; 20,818 jobs), La Libertad (8.7%; 19,776 jobs), Ica (6.7%; 10,823 jobs) and Lambayeque (7.4%; 9,749 jobs).

During the January-November 2019 period, the number of formal jobs increased in La Libertad, Arequipa, Callao, Piura, Ica, and Lambayeque, which together accounted for 27.1% of the total.

More women in formal labor force

Formal employment among women grew 4.6% in November 2019 from the same month of the previous year, that is, 57,365 women were integrated into the formal sector.

So far this year, the participation of women in the formal private sector has expanded 0.3 percentage points compared to the same period last year.
