The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has signed air service agreements with the Republics of Finland and Korea, Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Ignacio Higueras announced.

The diplomat participated in "Primer Foro Andino: Desafíos del Transporte Aéreo en la Región" (First Andean Forum: Challenges of Air Transportation in the Region) held on Tuesday in the Peruvian capital Lima.

At the event, the ambassador pointed out that Peru will soon sign a similar bilateral agreement with the United Arab Emirates.

He added that the Horizontal Agreement with the European Union (EU) is being negotiated.

At the forum, high-ranking representatives pointed out that air transportation is an engine to move the economy forward and increase the tourist flow. That means, it expands the labor market in various areas, boosts the tourism sector, and improves trade worldwide.

They also explained that the world economy has been recovering from one of the most serious crises that humanity has gone through, the COVID-19 pandemic.

Within this framework, the air transportation and tourism sectors experienced a deep crisis.

However, it was detailed that to date there is clear evidence of the recovery of private companies in the air transportation sector. Yet there is still a long way to go, not only to reach the previous levels but, above all, to largely overcome pre-pandemic connectivity figures.

In this sense, it should be noted that air transportation is of vital importance for the tourism sector, because approximately 90% of tourists who arrive in Peru do so by air, even from distant countries such as South Korea —a nation with which Peru has just signed an air services agreement.

On the other hand, foreign trade and business are facilitated by the increase in air connectivity since it grants exporters access to world markets.

Furthermore, it was indicated that Peru currently promotes the sustained development of air transportation and works from the Andean Community Pro-Tempore Presidency in attention to the catalytic role played by this sector in regional economic reactivation.

To this end, there is an Air Connectivity Board, led by the Ministry of Foreign Trade-Tourism. It is also made up of the Ministries of Transportation-Communications and Foreign Affairs, as well as various private entities.

Moreover, it is expected that by January 2025 Lima Airport Partners (LAP) will deliver Jorge Chavez International Airport's new infrastructure, with a capacity for close to 40 million passengers, which will turn it into the region's hub.

The aforementioned event was promoted by Peru within the framework of its Pro-Tempore Presidency of the Andean Community (CAN).
