Peru's extractive fishing activity has experienced a significant growth of 94.1% —in terms of volume— in July this year, the Ministry of Production (Produce) reported on Wednesday.

In this regard, Production Minister Jose Salardi affirmed that this positive result is added to the June outcome, and would reflect a recovery in the fishery sector, thanks to greater catches of anchovy and other hydrobiological resources.

In July, landings of hydrobiological resources amounted to 619,000 metric tons (MT), 300,300 MT higher than those of July 2019, mainly due to the good performance of the extractive activity of anchovy to supply the fish meal industry.

Anchovy landings aimed at indirect human consumption went up by 144.8% to 489,800 MT in the seventh month of the year.

"This result was 289,800 MT higher than the volume recorded in July 2019, due to favorable oceanographic conditions that allowed the greatest extraction of this resource in the north-central zone of the country during the First Fishing Season 2020," Salardi said.

The ports with the highest landings include Malabrigo (208,000 MT), Chimbote (68,000 MT), Coishco (48,000 MT) and Bayovar (41,000 MT), which together account for 74.6% of the catches aimed at indirect human consumption.

Likewise, the volume of landings of species aimed at direct human consumption experienced a rise of 8.9% to 129,800 MT in July, compared to the same month in 2019.

"This result is mainly driven by the increase in squid (41.9%) and bonito (147.2%) catches, which contributed to the good performance of the frozen food industry (27.9%)," the minister concluded.
