Peru: Facility attached to Cayetano Heredia Hospital starts treating COVID-19 patients

00:13 | Lima, Jul. 2.

The care and isolation facility attached to the Lima-based Cayetano Heredia Hospital started operating to treat COVID-19 patients and strengthen the health strategy introduced by the Government during the state of emergency.

This health center has been built as a temporary structure on the hospital site located in San Martin de Porres district to take care of patients from the capital city's northern neighborhoods.

The facility is equipped with 62 hospital beds —each one supplied with oxygen 24 hours a day— as well as modern medical equipment.

The facilities include negative pressure ventilation to blow air through air ducts.

Cayetano Heredia Director Aida Palacios noted that the new temporary unit will allow the staff to see more patients. "We are going to improve the response to the demand for care," she commented.

The 1,800-square-meter infrastructure was set up in a space of 2,200 square meters. The construction works were carried out by a brigade of 150 people —under the strictest biosafety protocols— over the last weeks.

Fifth temporary hospital

The healthcare center will be run by 212 people including health professionals, members of the Lima 2019 Special Legacy Project, as well as the food, security, cleaning, and laundry service staff, among others.

This is the fifth temporary hospital set up by the Lima 2019 Special Legacy Project in recent weeks, after the facilities erected at Hipolito Unanue Hospital (El Agustino district), Sergio Bernales Hospital (Collique), Lolo Fernandez Coliseum (Cañete), and Huacho Regional Hospital.
