The Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has expressed its condolences to the Indonesian Government on the deaths and injuries caused by a 5.6-magnitude earthquake that struck the city of Cianjur in Java province.

"The Government of Peru expresses its most heartfelt condolences to the Government and people of Indonesia, over the deaths and injuries following an earthquake that hit Java on Monday," the government agency said yesterday in a post on social media.

"Likewise, it (the Peruvian Government) extends its wishes for the speedy recovery of those injured after this unfortunate natural catastrophe," the statement reads.

In an earlier report, the Consular Section of the Peruvian Embassy in Indonesia said that the police had so far not identified any Peruvian nationals among the affected.

International media reported that at least 268 people have died and more than 1,000 were injured as a result of this natural disaster.
