Peru PM: Election board has last word on former lawmakers re-election

13:58 | Lima, Nov. 11.

Peru's National Election Board (JNE) has the final word on whether or not the dissolved-Congress members can run in the January 2020 parliamentary elections, Prime Minister Vicente Zeballos affirmed on Monday.

"From the perspective of the Government (the Executive Branch), we ratify the non-re-election for the January (2020) process and the 2021 process. However, the National Election Board has the last word on the matter," he told reporters.

Nonetheless, he insisted that —beyond the interpretations— the organization —that must issue a resolution on the matter— is the JNE.

Bolivia

Regarding the resignation of Bolivia's former President Evo Morales (2006-2019) from the post last Sunday, he said Peru is respectful of the foreign States' sovereignty and predicted that the situation will be settled immediately —in accordance with the neighboring country's constitutional and legal order.

Thus, a worse social conflict in Bolivian territory might be prevented.

Remarks were made after participating in the launch of the Schools of Life Strategy at Fe y Alegria Nº 4 School located in Lima's peripheral San Juan de Lurigancho district.
