Peru: Elected lawmakers receive credentials

15:09 | Lima, Feb. 28.

The plenary session of the National Election Board (JNE) on Friday announced the official results of the 26 January 2020 extraordinary parliamentary elections and issued the credentials to the 130 legislators elected back then.

The event featured President Martin Vizcarra and Prime Minister Vicente Zeballos. JNE Chairman Victor Ticona gave the keynote speech.

The general record includes the result of the count with 100% of the proclamation records prepared and signed by the 60 Special Election Boards (JEEs) authorized for the electoral process, once the observations and challenges have been resolved.

With these credentials, the elected lawmakers are now able to be sworn in as members of the Congress of the Republic and complete the 2016-2021 congressional period.

The delivery of these documents was held 33 days after the election day, far surpassing the historical average of 50 days during general elections in 2006, 2011, and 2016.

This record was achieved because the 60 JEEs proceeded to resolve —rapidly and in strict accordance with the law— the procedural burden they received (11,573 observed records) by attending the exhortation given by JNE Chairman Victor Ticona.

In addition, the supreme electoral court did the same with the cases that came on appeal, holding public hearings in strict respect for the right to defense of the parties and issuing the respective resolutions promptly and in accordance with the electoral rules.

The new 130 legislators will serve the remaining period of the 2016-2021 legislative tenure, following the dissolution of Congress.

They are expected to take up duties once the National Election Board (JNE) has granted them the corresponding credentials.
