Peru was elected by acclamation Chair of the Group of Experts on Maritime Narcotrafficking for the 2021-2022 period, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported on Wednesday.

The elections were held on Tuesday within the framework of the 70th Regular Session of the Inter-American Drug Abuse Control Commission (CICAD).

In this regard, Peru presented its candidacy taking into account the importance of promoting and strengthening international cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking, since the aquatic environment remains one of the main scenarios for the transportation of illicit drugs.

At that session, El Salvador was also elected as the Vice-Chair of the aforementioned group of experts.
