Peru: Early childhood is a Government's priority

13:10 | Lima, Feb. 28.

Peru's Development and Social Inclusion Minister Ariela Luna has affirmed that early childhood is one of the priorities established by the Executive Branch.

Her remarks were made Thursday in the southern region of Cusco as she monitored the commissioning of two new children's comprehensive care centers as part of Cuna Mas program.

Both facilities, located in Cusco's district of San Sebastian, will offer day care services to 48 children aged 6-36 months.

"Early childhood is one of the Government's priorities. Therefore, boys and girls under Cuna Mas are assisted by more than 5,000 mother caregivers at similar centers nationwide in order to ensure early childhood development," the minister emphasized.

Cuna Mas

Cuna Mas services are tailored to the needs and customs of families who live in remote highland and rainforest areas with high rates of poverty.

In Cusco region alone, Cuna Mas has 118 facilities that serve 2,919 girls and boys. Meanwhile, through the Family Accompaniment Service, (SAF), 966 facilitators visit —once a week— 9,584 families enrolled in the program.

The minister noted that Cuna Mas centers encourage play among children. Besides, they provide them with a series of capacities for their future roles in society.
