Peru: Demonstrators gather outside Uruguayan Ambassador's residence

10:16 | Lima, Nov. 19.

Demonstrators on Sunday gathered outside the Uruguayan Ambassador's residence in Lima to either express their opposition or support to former President Alan Garcia, who entered the diplomatic facilities with the purpose of requesting asylum.

Garcia is currently under investigation for having allegedly received money from the Odebrecht company.

A line of police officers was at the location to prevent any kind of violence between the ex-President's supporters and detractors from happening. However, some violent acts were reported.

As is known, Brazilian construction giant and corruption-tainted Odebrecht allegedly paid bribes to secure the Lima Metro Line 1 contract during Garcia's presidency (2006-2011).

Last Thursday, investigative journalism site IDL-Reporteros reported Garcia had received US$100,000 from Odebrecht for a lecture in Sao Paulo. He had denied the allegations and said he would stay in the country.

Alan Garcia served as President of Peru between 1985-1990 and 2006-2011.
