Peruvian Defense Minister Jorge Chavez Cresta on Tuesday overflew the basins of Chillon, Lurin, and Rimac rivers, in the view of the rise of flow due to rains and risks related to El Niño phenomenon.

"Minister Jorge Chavez conducted an overflight to inspect the basins of Chillon, Lurin, and Rimac rivers, in order to monitor the local intervention in areas that might be affected by the increase of flow due to seasonal rains and dangers related to El Niño phenomenon," the Ministry of Defense (Mindef) reported.

In the case of Rimac River, the overflight served to verify dredging and channeling works, as well as the construction of dams, carried out by the Municipality of Metropolitan Lima in stretches across the districts of San Juan de Lurigancho, El Agustino, Rimac, and Lima.

"Thanks to an Army helicopter deployment, we have overflown three basins of the Chillon, Lurin, and Rimac rivers that run the city of Lima, thereby confirming that the flow of said rivers is not high yet," Chavez stated.

The Defense sector's head remarked that the overflight also served to verify that cleaning and dredging works have been undertaken, which makes it possible to provide security to the people leaving along the river basins.

"Moreover, the risk posed by some bridges due to the rise in the rivers' flow was confirmed," he added.

In recent statements, Prime Minister Alberto Otarola reiterated that the Executive Branch has the necessary resources to address the climate events reported in different parts of the country.
