Peru Defense Min: Fuel theft is an isolated case

18:33 | Lima, Dec. 9.

Defense Minister Walter Martos on Monday said that the detention of military personnel under investigation due to fuel theft is an isolated case that does not undermine the credibility of the Peruvian Army.

"The Army and the Armed Forces are the homeland's tutelary institutions that are beyond any corruption (acts), any element, or member who has chosen the wrong path," Martos told reporters.

Throughout history, military bases have always been at the service of the country, and they are cemented on their values rather than their weapons.

However, the dignitary referred that —in any group— there are always those who pursue the incorrect path, but it is not a stain on the reputation of Peru's Army or the Armed Forces.

"It has been managed in isolation, it is an isolated case that does not involve the Army's strength," the Minister pointed out.

Likewise, having mentioned that precautions were taken in previous years, he said that the General Command has reached out to the State-run Petroperu in order to apply computerized system for monitoring fuel consumption.

As is known, Petroperu is a company owned by the Peruvian State under private law, dedicated to the transportation, refining, distribution, and sale of fuel and other products derived from oil.

Remarks were made after participating in the ceremony to commemorate the Peruvian Army Day and the 195th Anniversary of the Battle of Ayacucho, which consolidated Peru's Independence in 1824.
