A total of 4 million domestic and foreign tourists are expected to visit the Imperial city of Cusco this year, Regional Governor Edwin Ticona reported.
Speaking from the
9th GORE-Executive meeting in Lima, the official estimated the arrival of 5 million visitors in 2019 and 7 million as soon as the Chinchero Airport project is completed.
He went on to say data shows that
tourist numbers are on the rise as the Inca city not only records the history of
Peru, but also enjoys a geographical diversity that makes it even more attractive.
"Now we have the perspective that Cusco's historic status is not just because of
Machu Picchu and Sacsayhuaman, but because it houses an ecological reserve with potential ecosystems in High-Andean and Amazon regions," he told Andina news agency.
Winikunka
"Winikunka is an ecosystem geographical resource visited by plenty of tourists every day," he remarked.
Furthermore, he noted there are similar spots across the region, like natural reserves, which the regional government is trying to maintain and turn into tourist attractions.
Licona emphasized that Cusco has an environmental, ecosystem, and geographical potential in Andean and Amazon regions, seeking intangible status with Regional Conservation Area declarations.
