The
citadel of Machu Picchu and the
Inca Trail to such site, located in Cusco, will be equipped with surveillance cameras to tighten security and prevent incidents that may affect tourism in the area.
The installation will be possible thanks to agreements signed by Ministries of Culture —through
Cusco's Decentralized Culture Directorate (DDC)— and Environment —represented by the National Service of Natural Protected Areas (Sernanp)— as well as by
Machu Picchu Municipality and Peru's National Police.
According to
Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary Head, Ernesto Escalante Valencia, the first phase —due to be completed this month— includes the installation of cameras along the Inca Trail.
The equipment will be placed at the starting point, at the end of the trail, as well as in key and critical zones.
High Mountain Rescue Unit (USAM) agents have been deployed to choose the best places to install the devices so that they can ensure the safety of
visitors.
The aim is to guarantee the security of the 500 people walking the 43-km trail from Piscacucho to
Machu Picchu each day.
As is known, the famed route takes tourists through altitudinal variations between 2,550 and 4,200 m.a.s.l.
Along the way, hikers can find small archaeological monuments like Llaqtapata, Warmihuañusca, Sayacmarca, Runkurakay, Phuyupatamarca, Intipata, Wiñayhuayna, and Intipunku, among others.
