Peru: Credit up 6.3% year-on-year in May 2022

Credit to the private sector —which includes loans granted by banks, finance companies, cooperatives, as well as municipal and rural savings banks— registered a growth of 6.3% last May over the similar month in 2021, the Central Reserve Bank (BCR) has reported.

In particular, a year-on-year acceleration was observed in loans to individuals, which reached 14.7%, although there was less dynamism in business credit which rose by 2%.

In monthly terms, the issuing entity reported that total credit growth was 0.8% due to an increase in loans to individuals (1.7%) and companies (0.3%).

By currencies, credit in Peruvian Soles rose monthly by 0.4% last May, reflecting higher credit to individuals —offset by less dynamism in business credit.

According to the BCR, the growth rate of credit in Peruvian Soles over the last 12 months remained at 6.9% in May —with greater growth of credit to individuals in national currency at 16.2%.

In U.S. Dollars, credit to the private sector advanced at a monthly rate of 2.2% in May. In year-on-year terms, it did so by 4.2% compared to the same month of the previous year.
