The Presidency of the Council of Ministers (PCM) on Wednesday posted a message to commemorate the National Day of Indigenous or Native Women today.

In this regard, the PCM highlighted the important role they play in their communities, by promoting and passing on cultural diversity to new generations.

The PCM also pointed out that it continues undertaking efforts to guarantee the rights of this sector of the population.

The Day of the Indigenous Woman was designated in honor of Micaela Bastidas, wife of Jose Gabriel Condorcanqui (Tupac Amaru II) —both executed on May 18, 1871, for rebelling against the exploitation of indigenous peoples by the Spanish mayors.

This important date was declared on September 30, 2020, through Law No. 31048.
