Peruvian Culture Minister Alejandro Neyra on Saturday announced that the COVID-19 risk level in Loreto region, as well as in one Puno Province, has been changed.

The decision was made during a virtual session of the Council of Ministers.

According to the high-ranking official, the Ministerial Cabinet is currently assessing the indicators from each region, concerning COVID-19 figures.

"Loreto was in a high-risk situation and it has been changed to very high risk; within this region there are two provinces that are at extreme risk such as: Maynas and Ramon Castilla," he told RPP radio and TV station.

In this sense, Neyra explained that these two provinces are located very close to the three-frontier area (Brazil, Colombia, Peru) —a zone that raises concerns due to the arrival of the Brazilian coronavirus variant.

"The other one that has been changed to extreme risk is a province in Puno region (…)," the minister expressed.

Likewise, he pointed out that —next week— the Council of Ministers might make a decision regarding
the measures in extreme-risk regions, which currently feature lockdowns in Lima Metropolitan Area and nine regions.

"(…) We are holding meetings every day and assessing the figures; therefore, yesterday, we made a decision concerning two regions," Neyra added.
