Peru Congress: "Govt's willingness to reform pension system is the best alternative"

08:52 | Lima, May. 1.

Peruvian Congress Chairman Manuel Merino has welcomed the Government's readiness to reform the private and public pension system, saying it urgently needs to undergo comprehensive reform.

"The Government's willingness to undertake a comprehensive reform of public and private pension funds is the best alternative. I think that is what we have to aim at," he remarked.

Statements were made on Thursday to TV Peru, when asked about the proposal made by the Executive Branch to establish a mixed commission comprising representatives of the two branches of the State in order to propose changes for workers in six months.

"Today the Parliament's Board of Spokespersons decided to submit the President's request to the Labor Commission in order to join a legislative initiative approved in 2017 or 2018, which established an articulated work between the Executive and Legislative Branches," Merino pointed out.

Then, he said, we have to "join (efforts) because I do think that a reform of public and private pension funds, which the country urgently needs, is necessary."

"This is part of the proposal made by the Executive Branch, and the Parliament has also been working accordingly. The Legislative regulation does allow a mixed commission comprising members of both branches of the State," the Parliament head added.
