During a plenary session on Wednesday, the Congress of the Republic approved the constitutional reform bill that reinstates the bicameral system, featuring the establishment of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies.

The draft bill by the Constitution Commission was approved with 91 votes in favor, 31 against, and 3 abstentions.

As is known, the aforementioned constitutional reform was approved in a second voting session. The initial one was held during the previous legislature on November 16, 2023.

In accordance with Constitution's Article No. 206, the reform required a second vote in the next successive ordinary legislature to pass.

It must be noted that two-thirds of the legal number of lawmakers was required for approval.

After the voting session, Congress Chairman Alejandro Soto indicated that the approved bill will be submitted to the Presidency of the Republic for enactment and publication.

Being a constitutional reform, the bill cannot be vetoed by the Executive Branch, according to the Constitution's Article No. 206, Parliament noted.

The constitutional reform for the return to bicameralism involves Bills No. 660, 724, 792, and others.

According to the approved text, 60 senators and 130 deputies will be elected in the next general elections.
