Peru, through its
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, condemned the attacks by the Israel Defense Forces on the Jabalia refugee camp, in northern Gaza, which caused hundreds of deaths.
Moreover, it expressed deep concern about the serious worsening of the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.
In a statement, the government agency noted that Peru condemns and will condemn violence wherever it comes from.
It states that, since the terrorist attack by Hamas against Israel, which unleashed a spiral of violence and a worsening of the conflict in the Middle East, causing numerous civilian deaths and injuries, Peru has been closely monitoring the security situation and the deterioration of the humanitarian situation in said region.
"Peru emphasizes that, as the Secretary-General of the United Nations (Antonio Guterres) has stated, the right to self-defense must be given in compliance with international law, including international humanitarian law, and under the principles of distinction, necessity, proportionality, and precaution," it indicates.
For this reason, the statement added, it once again urgently calls for respect for international law, in particular international humanitarian law and international human rights law, in order to ensure the protection of civilians and humanitarian personnel, everywhere, without distinction of creed or nationality.
After reiterating its condemnation of Hamas' terrorist attacks against Israel, Peru reaffirmed its support for the resolution adopted at the 10th Emergency Special Session of the
United Nations General Assembly.
Said resolution calls for an immediate, durable, and sustained humanitarian truce leading to a cessation of hostilities; urges immediate, full, sustained, and safe humanitarian access to Gaza; and calls for the immediate and unconditional release of all civilians held captive; demanding their safety, well-being, and humane treatment in compliance with international law.
