Chinese executives have expressed interest in building a cable car in Huaral province's Rupac archaeological complex, Huaral's Hotels, Restaurants and Related Establishments Association (AHORA-Huaral) Chairwoman Rosa Elena Balcazar affirmed.

The entrepreneur noted the initiative would contribute to the promotion of the pre-Hispanic ruins as a new tourist attraction for domestic and international visitors.

"The Chinese business sphere has been keen on building a cable car […] ever since the [Peruvian] Congress declared Rupac a matter of national interest," Balcazar said while addressing a recent trip to the Asian Giant.

If realized, the cable car would run around 6 km, significantly shortening travel times between the town of Pampas (the closest one to the ruins) and Rupac.

Rupac is located 156 km northeast of the country's capital city of Lima.

Nowadays, visitors cover the said stretch on foot, but a cable car link would cut the 3-hour trek to a 30-minute ride.

Despite current access limitations to reach the pre-Inca sanctuary located at 3,400 m.a.s.l., Balcazar highlighted Rupac's tourist influx has gathered momentum.

"Rupac visits exceeded 5,000 in the first semester of the year," a considerable rise from the 1,073 visits recorded in 2015.

The guild head also anticipated a series of improvements along the 8-km route leading to the complex, including infrastructure for visitors to take in the view of a waterfall.

Rural tourism

Likewise, Balcazar anticipated the upgrading of Pampas' hotel infrastructure to satisfy the future demand if the cable car is built.

Locals, who currently provide rural community tourism services like accommodation and food, will receive training by the Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry to enhance the quality of the service.
