The President of the Republic Dina Boluarte on Friday announced that the replica of the Japanese ambassador's residence has been upgraded, so that it can be considered by the Ministry of Culture as the "Centro de Interpretacion Museo Contemporaneo Chavin de Huantar" (Chavin de Huantar Contemporary Interpretation Center Museum).

Therefore, the facility that served to host the preparation for these commandos will become a space to promote the Armed Forces' courage, revealing to its visitors why this military operation represents a historical legacy for all Peruvians, Mrs. Boluarte underlined.

During the ceremony for the 26th anniversary of Chavin de Huantar Operation, the President stated that this military action constitutes unquestionable proof of the successful fight of the Armed Forces against terror.

Similarly, the Head of State highlighted the courage of the commandos who participated in said operation.

"Not only did they rescue Peru from the bloody arms of terrorism, they also issued a firm and clear message: that nobody shall dare to threaten our freedom, that nobody shall dare to undermine our democracy, and that nobody shall impede our right to peace, life, and development," she stated.

Furthermore, the top official said the Government will strengthen the frontal and relentless fight against crime, with more police agents on the streets, as well as with greater resources and legal instruments.

"We face delinquency and crime, which not only take away the belongings from our citizens, but also their own lives, generating pain and anxiety. We are not willing to continue tolerating these enemies of society," Mrs. Boluarte emphasized.

"With dialogue and consensus, with efficiency and transparency, with energy and courage, we will fulfill the mission of moving our country forward and setting a path for progress, social justice, and well-being for all Peruvians," she added.

On April 22, 1997, a military group made up of 195 members of the Army and Navy Special Forces, relying on the invaluable support of a group of miners, carried out the Chavin de Huantar Operation at the then-Japanese ambassador's residence in Lima.

This action allowed the rescue of 72 hostages who had been held captive since December 17, 1996, by members of the terrorist Tupac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA).

Today, President Boluarte was joined by Ministers Jorge Chavez (Defense), Vicente Romero (Interior), Julio Demartini (Development-Social Inclusion); Congress Chairman Jose Williams Zapata; military authorities; former Special Intelligence Group of Peru (GEIN) members; Chavin de Huantar commandos; their relatives; and Japanese Ambassador to Peru, Kazuyuki Katayama.
