Peru calls for joint efforts to preserve Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary

12:21 | Cusco (Cusco region), Apr. 16.

The Executive Branch —through its Environment, Culture, Foreign Trade, and Tourism Ministries— as well as Cusco's regional government and municipalities, are working together for the conservation of the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu.

A special session of the Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary Management Unit Committee was held in this regard.

The event featured Ministers Lucia Ruiz (Environment), Ulla Holmquist (Culture), and Edgar Vasquez (Foreign Trade and Tourism), as well as Cusco Governor Jean Paul Benavente, Machu Picchu Mayor Darwin Baca, and National Service of Natural Protected Areas (Sernanp) Head Pedro Gamboa.

The meeting took place at the Cusco Regional Government's conference room, where participants drafted a joint agenda to enhance the UGM, providing a comprehensive vision to promote tourism and the conservation of the Inca citadel.

In this context, Environment Minister Lucia Ruiz referred to the first solid waste recovery plant (recently opened in Machu Picchu district), which converts organic waste into charcoal.

She noted the fact that such infrastructure is the first of its kind all over the country and is under the supervision of a local government.

The charcoal produced at this plant will be used as fertilizer in afforestation and reforestation projects, as well as to improve agricultural production at the district's populated centers.

Among other things, the UGM Management Committee members agreed to meet every three months. The next meetings will be held in July, October, and December this year.
