12:03 | Lima, Dec. 25.

At 6:11 a.m. (local time) and weighing 3.64 kilograms, Ayla Shamtalla Calixto Huillca came into the world, thus becoming the first baby registered on Christmas Day at the National Maternal Perinatal Institute in Lima.

Her mother, Magaly Huillca (27), and father, Anderson Calixto (25), moved to Lima from Cusco in search of a better future.

On this occasion, both of them were very excited about the arrival of their first daughter, who was taken care of by institute staff.

"I thank God and hospital staff. I feel very happy. I reside in (Lima's) San Juan de Lurigancho district, but I came from Cusco; my wife is from Cusco, too. I have been (residing) in Lima for seven years and she for four (years)," he said in remarks to RPP radio and TV station.

The baby came into the world through natural birth, which was covered by the Comprehensive Health Insurance (SIS) system, said Deputy Benefits-Health Insurance Minister Augusto Tarazona. The official was in charge of presenting the newborn to the press.

At this time of the morning, three pregnant women are in labor. Thus, the arrival of their babies is expected in the next few hours.

During its 195 years of institutional life, the National Maternal and Perinatal Institute has managed to assist mothers in the delivery of 4 million babies.
