Peru: Armed Forces confirm death of Shining Path's 'Comrade Raul'

11:35 | Huanta (Ayacucho region), Mar. 30.

The Joint Command of the Armed Forces has confirmed the death of Jorge Quispe Palomino, alias Comrade Raul, a member of the Shining Path Central Committee in the Valley of Apurimac, Ene, and Mantaro rivers (VRAEM) and of the Quispe Palomino family clan.

In a statement, the Joint Command reported that the Armed Forces and National Police patrolled the area of Banderita —located in the district of Canayre in Huanta province (Ayacucho region), within the territorial area of VRAEM— during a joint operation held on October 29, 2020.

Such operation resulted in a clash with terrorist criminals and, as part of such confrontation, law enforcement officers received fire support from helicopters and aerotactic reinforcements throughout neighboring terrorist camps, which damaged the facilities and impacted members of the terrorist central committee.

The military intelligence took note of the operation, which resulted in three deaths and seriously injured five members of the terrorist organization.

Additionally, it was reported that Jorge Quispe Palomino had been wounded by the aerotactic fire in nearby camps and that he suffered from a chronic kidney disease that worsened his condition.

The intelligence work confirmed that Comrade Raul died on January 27, 2021 as a result of the chronic kidney disease that was aggravated by the wounds of the October 29 attack on the camp where he was staying at.

"This information was hidden from their own cadres, to avoid discouragement and other negative effects for the purposes of the terrorist organization," the statement reads.

The Joint Command of the Armed Forces reiterated its commitment to continue fighting against terrorism under the current legal framework and in strict compliance with and respect for human rights, while contributing to the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.
