Tourist activity at the Archaeological Park of Machu Picchu resumed on Monday morning with a limited influx of domestic and foreign visitors.
Peru's main tourist attraction closed because of the second wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in the country.
The first train —operated by railroad operator PeruRail— left Ollantaytambo station for Machu Picchu Town at 5 a.m., carrying about 20 tourists.
The remaining train services ran throughout the day, carrying a decent number of passengers.
More than 50 people had visited the archaeological park until about noon, according to the Decentralized Culture Directorate of Cusco (DDCC), and 82 visitors were expected to come in total.
The world wonder has a pleasant climate. Besides, visitors can enjoy the sun and clear skies while on tour. Rainfall was reported at night and early morning of today, though.
On the other hand, PeruRail reported that the transport of materials via the local cargo and baggage services has resumed, which triggered a protest in the community of Qorihuayrachina last night.
