Peru accelerates action to address climate change

10:37 | Katowice (Poland), Dec. 11.

Peru has decided to make rapid progress regarding mitigation and adaptation efforts to cope with climate change, Environment Minister Fabiola Muñoz affirmed.

"It is time to increase our climate action ambition and our sense of urgency since there is no Plan B to survive," the government official stated.

Her statements were made at the 24th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP24) in Katowice, Poland.

"Nowadays, we experience the effects of severe droughts and extreme climate phenomena. Food security of our indigenous peoples —mainly women living in rural regions— is at risk," she commented.

"Therefore, we are convinced that adaptation and mitigation measures will deliver low-carbon, sustainable development resilient to climate change impacts," Muñoz expressed in line with Peru's commitments made under the Paris Agreement.

Addressing representatives of more than 145 countries, the Environment Ministry's head reaffirmed Peru's commitment to climate change.

According to the official, the Peruvian Government proposed 62 mitigation measures and the corresponding roadmap for their implementation after a multi-sectoral working process of nearly two years.

"We have no time to lose in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and opting for a sustainable future," she added.
