Peru: 6.2-magnitude quake hits Loreto region

An earthquake measuring 6.2 on the Richter scale jolted Peru's northeastern region of Loreto on Tuesday afternoon, Peruvian Geophysical Institute (IGP) reported.

The quake struck at 12:49 hrs. (local time) causing panic among the population.

The epicenter was located about 113 kilometers (70.2 miles) east of Pastaza in Datem del Marañon province, at a depth of 142 kilometers (88.2 miles).

Shaking was also felt in Moyobamba city, capital of San Martin region.

There have been no reports of damage or injury so far, according to Civil Defense authorities.
