Peru: 17 tons of native potatoes to be processed and exported in chips

13:10 | Lima, May. 28.

A first batch of 17 tons of native potatoes —which is part of a total of 260 tons to be sold until June— was sent by the Association of Agricultural Producers of the High-Andean Zones of Junin (Apezaj) to two chip processing and exporting companies.

These are two shipments (7 and 10 tons) delivered to the companies' processing plants located in the Province of Huacho and San Juan de Lurigancho District in Lima, where the fresh potatoes will be processed into chips prior to being exported to the United States market.

The shipping of these native potatoes —of the varieties Huayro Macho, Sumacc Soncco, Qeccorani, and Cacho de Toro— took place on May 20 in bags of 50 kilograms from San Antonio, Dos de Mayo, and Chicche communities' production zones, complying with the requirements made by the two companies.

The Ministry of Agrarian Development and Irrigation —through Sierra y Selva Exportadora Program— provided technical assistance to producers during the harvest, post-harvest, storage, and quality control stages.

These efforts were joined by Junin Region Directorate of Agriculture, as well as the Ministry of Development and Social Inclusion's Country Program agents.

Weekly shipments of approximately 20 tons of potatoes are projected until June, the month in which the committed 260 tons of said product are expected to be completed.

It must be noted that the main harvest season for native potatoes are between May and July.
