A total of 120 funerary contexts were uncovered as part of the archaeological research projects undertaken in the sectors of Kuta Qasa, Irokancha, and Inka Pirwa, at the archaeological site of K'anamarca, located in the district of Alto Pichigua in Espinar province (Cusco region), the
Decentralized Culture Directorate (DDC) in Cusco has reported.
The person in charge of the excavations at DDC-Cusco, Elder Antesana, stated that other objects were uncovered, in addition to the skeletons of individuals found at the funerary contexts within the enclosures.
Such ceramic objects included plates, bottles, aryballos, wood keros, metallic pieces such as sequins, tupus (ornaments shaped like pins), and pendants, as well as miniature zoomorphic sculptures, circular beads in chrysocolla and spondylus, among other objects.
Such funerary contexts date back to different stages of pre-Inca, Inca, and Inca-Colonial times, under the influence of Sillustani and Pacajes in the highlands, according to radiocarbon dating.
Antesana indicated that the finds were contained in circular and rectangular stone graves featuring finely carved lithics, at various depths.
The information on the discovery was revealed as restoration works were completed and the sectors of Kuta Qasa, Irokancha, and Inka Pirwa within the archaeological site were enhanced.
According to DDC-Cusco, restoration works were undertaken by the Functional Area of Works at DDC-Cusco. It referred the project to the Monuments Management Coordination Department which, through the Archaeological Areas and Sites Coordination Unit in the province of Espinar, will be in charge of its operation and corresponding conservation from now on.
Likewise, the decentralized directorate reported that experts at the Ministry of Culture managed to restore 49 rectangular and circular enclosures, as well as three platforms with retaining walls, with an investment of more than S/6 million (about US$1.8 million) after four years and a half of hard work.
