Deputy Foreign Affairs Minister Ignacio Higueras on Sunday affirmed that 100% of the polling stations being set up for Peruvian nationals overseas will open for the upcoming presidential run-off election.

He noted that Peruvians in Chile, Venezuela, Aruba, and Paraguay were not able to cast their vote in the first round of elections, due to the pandemic situation in those countries and around the world.

"We continue to monitor the pandemic situation in countries all over the globe. The election is being organized in every city and country, and 100% of polling stations will be set up," he told TV Peru.

According to the government official, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will continue to monitor the situation in the three weeks before the election, which is scheduled for June 6.

Additionally, he hopes conditions will remain unchanged so that all polling stations set up abroad can open.

In total, 3,440 voting tables will be installed at 214 polling stations in 208 cities, 79 countries across five continents, so that 997,033 Peruvians nationals abroad can cast their vote.

Earlier today, Higueras received —from the National Office of Electoral Processes (ONPE)— the electoral materials to guarantee the right to vote of Peruvians residing overseas.

ONPE General Manager Bernardo Pachas emphasized that Peruvians living in cities where the first round of elections could not be held —such as those in Venezuela (nearly 20,000 electors)— will be able to participate in the runoff process.

He explained that Peruvians in these countries were unable to vote in April 11 elections due to the pandemic situation, which is handled very differently in each country.
